openSUSE linux 12.2 and several issues

Hello,
I have just downloaded and installed openSUSE 12.2, I have several questions, please excuse me if these questions sound simple to you, but I have never used any linux distro except the Mandriva since 2005/6, and I am sort of newbie.

1) It did not allow me to install both KDE and Gnome? I had to choose between them?

2) Where do I get new software installed from, it does not have emacs, mplayer, xine, gcc,g++, ... .

3) I have seahorse installed but don't know how do I use it to get the default keyring?

4)When I try to run totem, it says that there are missing codecs, where do I get the codecs from ?

Thanks ,

No. What did you download? the CD or DVD edition, Live or not, etc. here isn't enough room on the CD for both, so the CD is either one or the other, but the install DVD can install both or more.

In any case, you can use the package manager to install more, and chose at log in time (the wrench/spanner tool).

In any case, you can use the package manager to install more... For anything that needs codecs (which are restricted/protected IP encumbered) you'll have to add the appropriate repos.

http://opensuse-guide.org/codecs.php (that's the unofficial guide to oS 12.2 - you may benefit from reading other sections such as http://www.opensuse-guide.org/repositories.php too)

This is probably a drier read than the 'Unofficial Guide', but it has good technical information about repositories.

Hi,
I had no choice of installing both KDE and Gnome, I had to choose between KDE,Gnome, other, I used the DVD installer.
any way , I picked Gnome, I have several issue that need to be solved.

OK, I took a look at it and found the YaST tool, but as I noticed it installs only from the net not from the DVD?

keyring blocks my mobile broadband from connecting, it asks about the default key, I know that I can use seahorse to overcome this, but don't know how, I tried to create anew key, but I can't manage to find it afterwards, can anyone help me with this??

Totem asks me about a codec to play an mp3 file, what is the name of the package that provide audio/video codecs??
I remember when I used Mandriva, that I downloaded a tar file with many codecs and put them in a certain folder(don't remember which), Is there something similar in openSUSE ?

Thanks,

That's not true of the DVD installer; you may not have noticed the option, but it is there. You select a desktop and go into some sub-menus and add other desktops. Not very clear, perhaps, but I did it ~10 days ago.

Well, by default. You can declare the disk as a repo, and then you can use the disk, too. Of course, every time it then looks for the disk, and that can be a pain, too.

Downloading tar files is, generally, bad news and should be avoided whenever possible (security, updates, inconvenience). See the links earlier for details on how to do this.

Don't know anything about this at all. What is seahorse?

lin66uxx 10-07-2012 04:33 PM

seahorse is a piece of software that allows you to encrypt/decrypt passwords.
Can others help with the keyring ?

you might want to try reading the opensuse wiki
http://en.opensuse.org/Main_Page

and user documents
http://doc.opensuse.org/

or
from the opensuse forum ( you have to login to novell for the forum)

see the links at the top left

there are also a LOT of other tools there

Hi,
OK, So I managed to figure out the keyring and thus I have internet and don't have to switch between windows and linux.
I also reinstalled and now I have KDE also, some times while booting it get stuck, can anyone help me with this?

I read quickly through the provided links above, I didn't find any actual info about the codecs needed in order for the media players run files like mp3.

How can I configure the emacs theme, in YaST there is no package color-theme ?

I also want to install mplayer, but it does not appear to be recognized by YaST ?
I wanted also to ask, how do change languages in Gnome and KDE? I installed multi languages..?

please help me as you can, Thanks.

lin66uxx 10-08-2012 11:03 AM

OK,
So I installed several codecs and mplayer through the internet using 1-click install (codecs-gnome-ymp, and win32-all) but mplayer runs with no sound, if I run it as superuser it plays, BUT, if I put the sound full volume it still weak.!
flash-plugin plays with no sound.
any help?
Thanks

this one as a regular user with no sound .
it seems that alsa does not work but pulse does, how can I set the driver for regular user as pulse ??

Thanks

lin66uxx 10-08-2012 03:36 PM

I managed to get the sound to work, so what is left is configuring emacs theme and switching between languages in Gnome, while installing I choose several languages as secondary languages, but shift-shift does not change the language.

So if I have to install languages, how is that done??

Thanks,

Ok, it sounds as if you'd be further off ahead to save any files you want to keep on external media, and completely re-install your OpenSUSE system from the DVD.

OpenSUSE uses software repositories to add software. These can be configured on the first boot of a newly installed system. The required proprietary drivers for audio and video is found in the Packman repository. It would probably be best to add those drivers before you install any media players.

Sorry to say, i haven't used Mandriva since it was called Mandrake, so i'm not really familiar on how they do things. With OpenSUSE remember to look at all the options on installation BEFORE selecting one of them. i believe --to get to the issue of your original question-- that you can install multiple desktop environments at that time. If not, it is not really an issue to install them after you have a working system.

lin66uxx 10-22-2012 05:33 AM

I solved all the problems , but still the problem that it halts while booting with the above messages.
any help with that !!!
