Unhappy openSuSE Desktop Effects - Crashed my system.. :(

Hello!
This is the second time and 2nd computer this happened.

OK, here is what happened.

I tried to get this cool 3D desktop switching effect installed and when i did that and rebooted my system, all i could see was just a black screen with mouse i could move and sometimes it changed to some other cursor because i know there was something but the screen was all black and i didn't see anything.. :(

OK, then i installed openSuSE on my laptop and tried to enable "Desktop Effects" and i did it, then i rebooted my system and the same thing.. all i could see was just a black screen with mouse i could move and sometimes it changed to some other cursor because i know there was something but the screen was all black and i didn't see anything.. :(

I am not sure what fault it is but i think it's my hardware but maybe not.. i'm a newbie in linux so i really don't know what caused this.. :( Could anyone explain this to me a little bit?

So far i don't know what to do, i can't do anything.. even when i go into safemode i get black screen. i think i have to reinstall the whole system..

Thanks!

Hello and sorry this keeps happening to you. I don't know the nature of your hardware or install, but have you installed the drivers for your graphics cards? Nvidia and ATI require special drivers (or XGL) to be installed that will allow you to use compositing effects.

Start here and focus on the "Desktop Effects" section. Follow the steps there and normally you will be able to get Desktop Effects working. I'm on openSUSE 11.0 with KDE4.1 Factory and am pretty stable. I installed nvidia proprietary drivers and then installed compiz-fusion. Works great and haven't had any significant problems.

What type of Laptop is it?
You might need the right driver modules and perhaps the correct X Server Configuration....
