OpenSUSE 12.1 and Tumbleweed make screen shake and flicker

I tried to install openSUSE 12.1, but after a seemingly successful installation, I booted up and the screen started flickering/shaking uncontrollably. The entire image of the desktop simply moves rapidly from side to side across the screen. However, if I move my mouse to the bottom-right corner, the flickering stops. The second I move it away, the flickering starts again. I cannot access any tty, which all appear as blank screens.

Then, I installed 11.4, and tried to upgrade to Tumbleweed. The same problem resulted.

Do I need a certain driver, and if I do, how do I get it?

Thanks.

No idea, since you don't give us any details about your computer. May be a video card problem, problem with the resolution you selected, or something else entirely. Tell us about your hardware, and maybe we can assist.

How should I tell you about my hardware? Is there a particular command I should run?

How about looking at the machine?? Something like "It's a Dell xxxxx", or "my video card is an nVidia XXXX"?

I have a Dell Dimension E520 and an IBM E74 monitor. According to "lspci", I have an Intel Corporation 82G965 Integrated Graphics Controller.

Edit:
Also, I forgot to mention this, but when I ran openSUSE 12.1 on a liveCD and a liveUSB, it worked fine.

Yes, all of that helps. Since it works with a live configuration, chances are it could be a resolution issue, as I suggested in my first reply. Have you tried changing the resolution to something lower? Granted, it may not be what you want, but it would let you work on the machine at least. And can you try a different monitor?

A new driver is available from Intel, as are troubleshooting guides:
