i had to download "gparted". Boot with it and repartition my drive. I wiped out the disk and created a small 1GB partition. (note I only had 192mb of ram) Then when I installed SuSE 10.3 I told YaST to use the 1gb as a swap space for the install. In YaST I repartitioned the rest of the drive normally...swap, var, home, /, etc. It seemed to install fine after that. Also...ACPI OFF. I hope this helps.

want me to fall back to /dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS541680J9AT00_SB0244SGKJE75E-part2 (y/n)

both yes and no do not work.. i have tried booting wiht the boot options insmod=ide-generic

please help me!
thanks
I have the same problem when I install openSUSE10.3 on an old machine. Even when I boot machine from DVD, I have to use 'brokenmodules=pata_via,via82cxxx'. Or else the machine goes done. I have to load ide-generic module manually before running yast and then installed the system. And then I have the same problem. My old machine is PIII 733(Coppermine) with VIA chipset, 128M RAM, WD 20G disk.
