OpenSuse 10.2 Freezes after working about half an hour

I have been working in OpenSuse 10.2 for quite a few months. It never crashed and I had simply no problem with it.

But since my last Suse update and co-incidentally also upgrading of my DDR RAM (from 256 MB to 768MB) this is the problem I am facing. After about half an hour or so of working suddenly the screen freezes. There are lines on the screen. Nothing works except the Reset button. But when I restart everything starts working again only to get frozen after some time. This problem has baffled me.

As I have windows in a separate HD I checked the system by working in Windows. Where I found everything is working just fine. So this must be a Linux related problem.

I would also add that I had tried the transparent menu system in KDE in Suse. I tried the Crystal style which was working fine also. I also had trauslancy (I hope I am correct with the spelling) effect enabled which I later disabled.

I will appreciate you guidance to make my SUSE running properly again.

google01103 05-29-2007 03:10 PM

a possibility - maybe it's your windowing system locking and not the Linux core. What happens if you ctl+alt+F1? Can you login at the prompt?

jan-portugal 05-29-2007 05:02 PM

I had a similar problem some years ago, and i tried everything from reinstalling, formatting etc. - but nothing helped.

One day, on system boot, i saw, that the computer only counted half of my RAM.
I took out the RAM (2 x 32 MB) to see, if anything was wrong with them.

Accidentally one wasn't put in properly, but my PC worked as a dream, although a bit slower.
The fault was a bad RAM-stick.

You should try a memorytest - I think it's 'memtest86' or something like that.

arindom 05-30-2007 03:24 AM

First of all thanks to both jan-portugal and google01103 for the help.

Regarding memtest86, it's a great suggestion because I also thought initially that may be the memory card is not matching. Sensing this while shopping for new memory stick, I took the last memory card (256MB DDR) in the shop and they gave me matching stick. Anyway I tested with memtest86 and it shown 5 out of 5 tests as passed. It took about 2 hours. As I was running out of time I had to stop. There were 4 more tests. I checked with mem86test site regarding test results. Passing one test is a clear enough indication that memory stick is OK.

Moreover as Windows is running properly with the same RAM I think the issue might be somewhere else. Somehow I feel during the last Kernel update something has happened. I should have mentioned earlier that my Suse Linux was not loading after that update. I had to use the Automatic Repair option from the DVD. May be something is happening with the display setting.

Regarding pressing ctrl+alt+F1, I cannot press any key at that point. It's a total FREEZE. Only reset works. Same thing happened today also when I
started SUSE in the morning it again freezed after about 10 minutes of working. In fact, that time I was going through your replies only in this thread, LOL :) . What an irony!

Thanks again for your help.

This is a total shot in the dark. Have you tried booting to run level 3 (no GUI) to see if it locks up when no GUI is running?

arindom 05-31-2007 03:12 AM

It really seems to be a shot in the dark. No I didn't tried to log in and watch the developments in a non-GUI mode because of lack of time. In the meantime I did tried to again run the auto correct from DVD option. Then I was able to run without trouble for about 3 hours, but again it crashed. I did checked the hardware section for screen settings. It showed 3D acceleration on. I tried to switched it off, just in case that is the cause but it gave an error in Xorg.99.log. It's a quite big file, if you need that to solve the problem I can reproduce it here.

statguy 05-31-2007 07:15 AM

Although my "shot in the dark" seems out there, there is method to my madness. The purpose of booting to run level 3 is to see if Xorg is the guilty party here or if the problem is deeper (but I'm sure you guessed where I was going).

I'm not sure your log would be informative to me, but post it since it may give a clue to others more knowledgeable than myself.

auxsvr 05-31-2007 09:03 AM

What is the type of graphics card that you use? What drivers have you installed for it? Have you edited manually the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? Are you using XGL? If so, disable it.

lambchops468 05-31-2007 02:54 PM

Yeah, I'm going for memory

Did you try any tight timings on your memory in your BIOS? I did that once and it froze only in Linux, but not in Windows.
Even the default memory timings in the BIOS might be too tight
try making them on the really safe side and see what happens.

[edit] By The Way: yes i have used memtest86 on my tight timings and it didnt' show any errors....

wendea 05-31-2007 02:57 PM

do you get any error in your log files?

arindom 05-31-2007 11:54 PM

I have a better news to share with you. May be the problem is solved. :)

I was using the Crystal style for transparent window borders and heading. I was also using transparent menus. May be they were the cause of problem. Yesterday night I switched both of them off and worked for nearly 4 hours without trouble. No crashes! Today morning also I am already working for two hours without problem.

This didn't worked yesterday because when the system started working properly after I switched off the transparent options and the crystal menus, then again I switched on the themes etc. So today I have not done that.

Regarding XGL option I could not find any such options as you can consider me to be someone who has made a switchover to Linux from XP. So I request you to be more descriptive. In my Graphics Card settings I found the 3D acceleration option is on. But since everything is working properly now I think it's ok.

My Xorg file output (this was when the trouble was there till yesterday)

Does this mean I should not use Crystal like themes in Linux (for Vista like windows)?

Thanks to all of you for extending your helping hands to me.

 Update on the crash status. This is really strange. Suse crashed again. This time I was working in Firefox. and suddenly it stopped working again, the display went blurred. I had to reboot and now I am again working in Linux for the last one and half hour. It is working but I am working with doubts in my mind, just waiting for the time when it will crash again.

I could have edited my last message, but I thought it is proper to tell you actually what happened?

Showing only part of today's log :

Does this mean anything important "Jun 1 06:33:38 localhost rcpowersaved: s2ram does not know your machine. See 's2ram -i' for details. (127)", as for me it's difficult to understand the meaning of such details.

Thanks

Do you use beryl or compiz (fancy 3D effects)? Most likely there's some problem with the graphics card driver, as many of them are unstable at times. If you disable AIGLX or XGL (I assume you're running beryl, it has a red gem icon in the bottom left corner), you shouldn't have any crashes. How did you activate beryl?

No I don't have Beryl, I have not tried any 3D effects. I only tried that Crystal theme but now I am back to normal window settings (Plastik).

Regarding XGL, I have removed it. I am not aware about compiz.

I have not done any tight memory settings. This problem seems to be quite typical. Just few minutes back I tried to login without GUI by ctrl+alt+F11, but the prompt never came. Then I again loaded the DVD and ran Auto-Repair. Now it is working but I am not sure how long will it allow me to work?

Thanks everyone for helping me to get over this problem. I hope we will be able to solve it quickly.

Can you check whether the BIOS video RAM setting is set sufficiently high (32 MB would be fine)?
