openSuSE 10.0 doesn't detect CDROM on install

Hi guys,

I tried to install openSuSE, however after it installs the first CD it reboots and goes back into the install afterwards...

The trouble is, when I get back to start installing packages from the second disk, it won't detect the cd drive.

Thats what the error message says in essence when clicking details (sorry can't remeber exactly), but it says "cannot find /dev/hdd".

I tried going ctrl-alt-f2 and mounting the cd drive myself but the hdd file isn't even there.

Then I tried a usb dvd drive and using lsusb I found it would detect the drive, but only for like about a second... not enough time to mount it or anything..

I started installing it twice and both times it happened.

However I managed to chroot from a rescue boot and run yast to install the gnome packages so I didn't have to use tvwm or whatever.

Now I like it and want to switch to it (it's on a second hard drive) however I want to have a proper install.

Anyway, hope you can help...

Cheers..

I don't know if this will help, but let's give it a try.

I have two hard drives, and one combo cdr/cdrw/dvdr drive. When I installed SuSE, the two hard drives were named hda and hdb. The cdr and cdrw are linked to /dev/hdc, and the dvdr is linked to /dev/hdd.

So. I'd suggest chrooting into your installation again, and use yast to find out how the cd drive is linked (i.e. to which device). It yast reports /dev/hdc, then edit /etc/fstab to correctly reflect /dev/hdc and the mountpoint /media/cdrom.

Or, you could just try editing fstab, changing the device to /dev/hdc instead of /dev/hdd, and try again.
