OpenSuse 10.0

Do I need to download all 5 of the OpenSUSE iso's in order to install a basic SUSE 10?

Basically, yes. A default install will use all 5 discs. You could download just 1 if you go DVD, though.

I thought the default install only used the first 3 (or even 2) discs, and then required the additional CD's depending on what software libraries and applications you choose to additionally install...?

I just did the base KDE install of OpenSuSE 10.0, it required all 5 discs(though 14 files from one disc and I think 3 from the last, which is highly annoying to say the least.)
If you use gnome maybe less, or if you remove some packages, you can probably get it to run, but by default all 5 discs are used, even if 2 are used only minorly.
