Only Root can access sound mixer (9.2)

Seem to have a minor irritant on my laptop -- It's not a critical show stopper but I can't get access to the sound mixer as a user. It's fine as root ????? --of all the strange problems I've had with Linux in the past this isn't one I've ever seen before either.

Otherwise Suse 9.2 Pro seems great. Even my Sony Vaio laptop with the weird Nvidia card at 1400X 1050 works fine.

Thanx

I think this is it, but try seeing what permissions /dev/dsp gives you. It's probably root only access.

solved !! (easy)

The permissions have changed a bit -- If you add the User to the SOUND GROUP (Audio) then it works fine.

I'm not sure why they would change the system so that you have to be a member of this group as pretty well everyone wants multi-media on a computer these days however I'm running SUSE 9.2 PRO so this might be more suited to "Corporate" environments.

Otherwise this is the most hassle free distro I've had.

One point also to note is on start up it sometimes reports it can't get hold of an IP address if you are using DHCP enabled. However logging on to the internet is no prob so just ignore the error .

Fonts are really nice too -- nice one SUSE .
