Only root can access Internet on openSUSE 11.2

I had some problem with creating the non-root user during installation of OpenSUSE 11.2 so i had to create the user my self. When logged into this account i can connect to my wireless account but i cannot access internet but as root i can access the internet.

I guess it must be some user management issue. But my knowledge is pretty limited in that area.

thanks in advance for your help

You should have a user management tool in yast that can help you with that. You will need to add your user to the group that allows access to your nic

There isn't an internet user group in SuSE.

You should provide information on your network settings as a regular user.
Not connecting to internet can mean many things, from DNS settings, but you can ping, to the wireless device getting an IP address.

How is your network configured? Have you run "kdesu yast2 network"?
Do you use if-* scripts or network manager. Maybe you just need to run knetworkmanager if the later.

Or is you're web browser set off line ?

The wireless device accesses and gains an IP address from my encrypted network without any problems. The "root" user can use the browser (firefox) without any problems (both internet and the local network). The non-root user can access the local network (eg: the wireless router configuration site)without any problems, but cannot access the internet.

The only configuration i have done is to setup the wireless access, using the default network manager GUI in open SUSE.

And No my browser is not working in offline mode....

I have exactly the same problem. No apps can access beyond the router. I can log onto the router, as normal.

If I login as root, I can access the internet, no problem.

Please if anyone has any ideas . . .

Please forgive me, I do not understand what you are saying. What does "hack somebodies thread" mean?

I commented on firewiz87's post, as I have the same problem and would like to encourage others to help find a solution. Surely if more than one person has this problem, and everybody started their own thread, we would end up with an unmanagable forum.

Again, please forgive me if I have misunderstood the purpose of a forum.

Guess it may be related to user permissions, because others have suggested this but I could not determine that any permissions were incorrect.

However, I discovered that any user account created after the installation did not have this problem with Internet access.

I redid the installation on the same equipment using the same install iso, and had the same problem when logging on with the user account created during installation. My solution is to delete this original user account created during installation. Thereafter I created the account again, same id user name etc, and everything works as it should.

actually i had problems creating a user during installation... this account which is giving me the problem was created after installation... anyway ill try to recreate the user... in case it solves my problem...

No reinstall, no firewall.

The possible solution can be a "simple" Firefox setting:

Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Connection - Settings

Here helped me the option "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network".
"No proxy" worked too.
