Question only internet when using router,

Hello

I just installed opensuse 10.2. clean. When i connect the PC directly to my ISP/LAN the internet is not working. (win works fine and suse 10 did too). Eth0 is active and working, but firefox cannot connect to webpages. However when I connect the PC to a router which then is connected to my ISP/LAN, the internet suddenly works just fine.

Anyone with ideas... or should I just hurry back to suse10

I am guessing there is a reason you can't just use the router?

It sounds like you might be getting bad (or no) DNS information, but it is hard to say without more information.

Did you see if you are getting a valid IP? What are your DNS servers set as? If you have DNS servers setup from your ISP, make sure you can ping them. You could also use public DNS servers and see if that helps.

Goto this address in firefox browser to see if it opens google. http://216.239.39.99/

Or if you are using KDE or Gnome open a window and type the web address in the bar and see if it opens.

You should have Suse 10.0 as a multiboot with 10.2 until you're happy with 10.2 - but if you haven't, you haven't. Anyway as root enter in a terminal the command "ifconfig". Then the output should show your IP address for the NIC on eth0. If it doesn't you'll need to configure it in Yast --> network devices --> net cards. In there you give the card a fixed IP address in line with the addressing of any LAN you have. If no LAN (just standalone) then use 192.168.0.2. Add the DNS servers advertised by you ISP on their website. DNS's map IP addresses to common-language addresses like 66.94.234.13 <--> yahoo.com. If that doesn't work buy a cheap router
