oh no i think i deleted bootsplash
 

Hi - I did an ftp system update on 9.1 personal and yast said i had 2 conflicts - one was bootsplash i think - anyway i tried to update but it kept looking for an installation cd instead of ftp site - i deleted (yikes) the conflict and now when i boot up there is no Suse graphics screen - and after the bootup process my screen goes blank, no nothing, and i have to turn off the box manually (yikes!)

Anyway, got this cd version of knoppix and am running from cd - can anyone please tell me how to fix this terrrible mess? I am trying to avoid losing 60 gigs of data in the /home files!!

I'm a newb, so just an idea for others to refine, but maybe you could use parted to resize one partition and make room on the disk to create a new one of about 60gb, even if this means destroying all other partitions but the one home is on. This is all from within knoppix. Then copy all the data into the new partition, and be sure to leave that partition when you reinstall. In later crashes, that home partition will save your bacon. I depend on my external hd after my mbr was destroyed once, and even my "safe" partition went south. Got enough money for a 60+ usb hd? It would be an easier solution if you do.

Perhaps have a problem with X windows, more specifically graphics card + monitor config. I've had blank screens before and usually it's due to inncorrect monitor set wrong or graphics card driver.

Do you see the normal the text boot messages on screen and after a certain point it just goes blank? If so have you tried switching back to the console (alt + control + F1 or alt + control + F2)?

If you can do this, then I think your problem is with X:

from the console, log in as root,
switch to run level 3 (so X windows shuts down)
# init 3
then run sax2 to reconfigure X
# sax2

Hi joelb.

Did you install a new kernel? It sounds like you have a kernel that doesn't have bootsplash or framebuffer console enabled. Also, check your /etc/inittab. There should be a line that says, "id:4:initdefault" or "id:5:initdefault".
