Nvidia sound problem

I just bought a ECS GeForce 6100SM-M motherboard with and integrated sound card.
The integrated chip is described as GeForce6100/nForce 405. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/news/1563

I have just completed a fresh install of opensuse 10.2 and I just want some kind of sound. I've read different places about this but can't get a solution.

Can someone help me out? What driver do I need?

If you want my lspci or my lsmod, I'll post it (but I'm not on my system right now).

The board uses HD audio. Need the exact chipset so lspci is a must. lsmod | grep snd will be useful too.

while we're at it:
cat /proc/saound/oss/sndstat
amixer
lspci -nv

Found some stuff:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/411/2
Quote:
On-board audio: Controlled by the chipset together with Realtek ALC660 codec (six channels).
http://blogs.sun.com/PotstickerGuru/category/techbiz
Quote:
[snip] the audio was another hybrid of sorts that used the MCP61 HD Audio controller coupled with a Realtek ALC660 codec. The controller seems to function to the Intel HD Audio spec and therefore similar to all the other nVidia Azalia (codename for HD Audio) controller. But the codec was a cheaper version of 5.1 audio, as opposed to the standard 7.1 Surround Audio for most HD Audio Codecs (such as the ALC880, 882, 885, etc.).
The realtech codec ame intel-hd-audio should be in the kernel already.

I've tried to install the audio driver,
NFORCE-Linux-x86_64-1.0-0310-pkg1.run

It gave me a error and a log file

Can someone tell me what is going on?

Here's the log file

00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

... I think MPC61 support entered the kernel from 2.6.17

lsmod | grep snd

please.

compile error - did you notice this bit?
Code:
echo " ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid."; \
echo " include/linux/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are mis
sing."; \
echo " Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it
.. it didn't like your kernel.

Which distro is this - there may be a precompiled version.

Having the same problem. Running Suse 10.2 on a AMD64. Have done make oldconfig && make prepare, also make cloneconfig the result is the same. This also happens if I try to install OSS or ALSA drivers.

However, I have installed Nvidia graphics drivers OK.

Someone please help have spent hours on this.

OK Godders, but I cannot do anything without info (reread prev posts). This ain't a developer site - save the "me too" posts for nvidia.

Hi Simon thanks for reply. Sorry if I have offended with my post but not sure how to say that I have the same problem in any other way. As you can see from my post I have already done "make oldconfig" and "make cloneconfig" which you pointed out in one of your replies. I had done this before reading reply. The outcome was the same with the same error messages.

Here is the information you asked for in previous posts.

lsmod | grep snd

cat /proc/saound/oss/sndstat
cat: /proc/saound/oss/sndstat: No such file or directory

You have no alsa drivers loaded at all, amixer is not installed... probably why there are sound problems.

Here's your soundcard...
00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
... this is the same as the OP.

cat /proc/saound/oss/sndstat
... sorry, that should be "asound" and mot "saound". Please repeat.

Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
... did you see dmesg?

The log file when I tried to install OSS sound is 90 pages long would you like that also?
... why did you try to install OSS sound? I think you need to udo any steps in that installation and reinstall alsa. You also shoulch check the kernel source is correct and youare using the x64 distribution.

Oh, and as with OP... did you follow the advise in the log?

echo; \
echo " ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid."; \
echo " include/linux/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are mis
sing."; \
echo " Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it."; \

You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

... I wish I could find that frakkin README!

Hi Simon Thanks for your time on this. I have been trying to get an answer for the last 3 weeks and I think I have got to a point where I cant see the woods for the trees. Here is some more info which may help.

cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
cat: /proc/asound/oss/sndstat: No such file or directory

This is just repeated.

I tried OSS as it says it has the needed drivers but it seem that it uses the ALSA drivers, unless I have misunderstood.

When I run alasconfig it sees my card and goes though the configuration, according to the final screen all is OK and for me to have fun.

If I try to configure sound card with yast I get this message

The kernel module snd-hda-intel for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.

I have also tried installing new kernel 2.6.21-rc5 which was a complete disaster and had to reinstall the current kernel.

I feel I am hijacking this thread from TridentKing, please let me know if I am acting out of place.

Again thanks for time.

Forgot to say.

You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

What I have found here has been a waste of time.

Don't bother trying to install oss. The drivers are blacklisted anyway. AFAIK, OSS is no longer supported.

The kernel module snd-hda-intel for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
... that's not the correct module.
If you look though the early posts, you'll see the card is hybrid which looks a lot like the hda-intel setup.

The driver you want should be the nvidia one; I think it is called nvsound or nvaudio.

The install log looks a great deal as though you are attempting to compile 64 bit code with 32 bit libs.

There is some suggestion that tho 2.6.21 kernel will support this card though.
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...t=75920&page=3
... also works in Feisty. It may just be a mahher of waiting for the next OpenSUSE distro kernel upgrade.

However, you should have a look at this:
