Yea im still using ubuntu but i installed it on my girlfriends pentium 4 toshiba sattellite. Everything worked out of the box including the built in wireless. She was a hardcore windows users but now she hasnt switched back to windows in a while. Definatly suits her needs and probably suits the needs of others as well. I definatly reccommend it for new linux users.

looking at the novel website teh e licence for SLED is $50 for 1 year or $125 for 3 years...

does this mean that you need to keep payong every year/3 years to keep using SLED ir is this just teh time for support?

will teh updates still work after a year?

on my next PC i am considering SLED 10 but if i have to keep paying every year i will probabbly wait for open suse 10.2
(curently using opensuse 10.1)

I am sure there would be some kind of "renewal" discount.

Although the life cycle for the products are 3 years, so maybe you'll just have to get the newer version at a discounted rate.. Dunno.. that would be a question for a Novell Sales person.

I just switched to SLED10 and I love it.

It does what it says. Buy a 3 year license and you will get 3 years of updates and support.
If you buy a 1 year license, you'll get updates for 1 year.

I myself got the 1 year pass, thats because I really hope the sl 10.2 will be in much better shape than its buggy little bother. oooop it isn't Suse Linux anymore, its opensuse 10.2., but anyway the next release should be stable and as usable as SLED and of cource the opensource version is free.

Novell has also pondered on Suse Linux Personal Desktop ( thats SLPD10 ?), but no final decision about that one has been confirmed.

Then there is the KDE4 aspect of things. KDE4 will be released later this year and the Opensuse 10.3 will probably be packed with this new qt4 thingy. So IMO it would be a waste of money to buy a 3 year lisence, because I know I will want to test the new kde when its done.

I have been working with Linux for the last one year, mostly on Red Hat Linux 9 and Enterprise Server 4, but i got few days a go the latest OS by Novell (SuSE Linux Enterprise 10) for Desktop and Server versions, and i tried to install them on VMware but managed only to install the Desktop not the server.

Anyway what i can say, now i can say BYE BYE windows, i cant describe it folks, this OS is awesome, i install it on my laptop which got high specs but the installation was smooth with no errors except for the XGL - Desktop Effects and with Novell website i managed to solve this problem.

I never expected Novell to do such an OS, never in my mind, what to tell u about this OS, its too much to tell, but there is lots of new futures that came new in this release, the new AppArm tool for adding extra level of security for each application run on the sustem, the Desktop effects which make u think that u live in a 3D game lol, the Virtualization which came built in to YAST for Server edition, and lots lots of features that i donít even know yet.

I saw that the most big issue with Novell's previous releases was the online update, but i tried it and i was really worry that i might run into a troubles like the others but i got the updates really smoothly and with no errors at all.

Try it folks, its really awesome OS and i encourage all of you to give it a try.

Will come later with some of my notes about the services into SLED 10.

Best regards

Interesting read. Have you actually tried to customize installation? I have, and SLED will not allow to change anything. For example select KDE and deselect Openoffice. Deselecting openoffice will automatically deselect whole KDE (Novell must introduce some stupid dependencies). Can you tell me why? Is that difficult to imagine that someone prefers starofice, or other (custom) office suite?

Everybody who uses zen seems to be satisfied with sole fact that zen can install software (because this wah at first virtually impossible, now it seems to be a real value (?). Everybody who use zen seems to be satisfied with very limited set of options in comparison to Yast. This means that most users have no idea how powwrful Yast PM was. If you would really use Yast PM then you should notice that simple installation is not enough, I want to select server, architecture, i want to have better (hierarchical) software database. Yast also better reselved dependency problems (if you know how to use it). List of options that yast has but zen does not is pretty long. zen is primitive crap.
Why SLED (aimed for enterprise) includes beta software (xgl)? XGL has quality problems, and does not support hardware acceleration.

Flashy does not mean quality.

This is only stupid attempt to compete with MS and Apple. Usability is something else and SLED removes big chunk of it. SLED is aimed toward first time users, but enterprise is not a bunch of novice.

I try to install SLED 10 on a IBM R40, no way so far.
First I wanted to make a dual boot installation with XP. After the first CD the system rebooted, and told me GRUB error 18, later GRUB error 22. Then GRUB could not read something in Section 2.
Since there was no dualboot or anyboot anymore I had to rescue the MBR to start XP again.
So, next try today, bought a new HD to go on with testing, and now after the reboot SLED eats CD 2 and 3, then restarts and shows a login window. Interesting, because the User part of the installation did not appear yet, and obviously there is not user and no password.

I keep on testing...

What did you do to fix it. I'm struggling with that right now.

Thanks,
