No Sound from Mic

I can't get my Mic to record anything. I've tried heaps of things I've read from people on IRC networks and around the net over the years, so I'm going to my last resort, the forums (I don't like to bug you on trivial matters.)

I can't seem to get any line-in sounds recording from my sound card (just in Linux though.) Nobody can hear me on Skype, I can't record Aux ports or mic ports. I'm all out of ideas now

This has been a problem with my computer and Linux ever since I got it. At a time in Mandrake 10 when I had my TV tuner card getting pictures, I had no sound. Could this be just a cheap AC97 soundcard compatibility issue? If so, what other Good sound cards are there out there for a PCI slot? I've been meaning to get a new one but don't like the idea of pulling everything out of the in-board one and plugging TV tuner card to input as well as front and back mic and speaker ports, Aux ports, Sterio in ports (I've an Aldi MD8083)

Please be nice.. I don't use Linux that often and I'm still a

I know that it is the deadly obvious question, but I will ask it, if only to get it out of the way. Have you checked with a mixer that your mic is not muted? For whatever dead-brained reason, almost all Linux distros ship with the mic muted. For SuSE, I would recommend checking with qamix, which is clean and easy to read.

I have also had trouble with various microphones, where some will work and some won't, with NO software change. Simply plugging a different microphone in makes all the difference. I have three, but only two of them seem to work. Have you tried more than one microphone? If you know that your current mic works in any other linux release, than just ignore this whole idea, but if you are not sure, it *could* be the mic, not linux. Might be worth a try.

This may not have been your TV card problem but some such as WinTV Go require an audio cable from the card to the PC's line input jack.
