no MAKE command under 9.1 Personal?

What's up guys...

After then endless days of trying to get GAIM to install, and after help from some of you on how to upgrade 9.1 Personal to Pro by updating the lib's and sources, the ./configure command actually finnished!

but again, with my luck I have seem to come uppon the impossible.

I dont seem to have the make command.

Is this possible? i've checked and if I do a man make sure enough the user manual comes up.

But everytime I type in make at a prompt I get this error:

bash: make: command not found

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks!

Is it in your path ? (check /etc/profile). What happens when you're logged in as root ?

Cheers,

The personal version of SuSE does not come with make or gcc so before you can compile anything you will need to install those first. I guess SuSE's reasoning behind that move was that the personal version was marketed towards people that just wanted a desktop OS and therfore, not being power users would not be compiling, if they wanted a new program they would most likely use the easier to install RPMs and YaST. Fortunately I think Novell has finally gotten the idea that even the basic users have a power user to turn to when they need help and power users want to be able to compile. So with SuSE 9.2 there no longer is a personal version.

Try looking at your local SuSE mirror to find the appropriate RPMs and install them through YaST.

Ahhh.. I guess that's explains it...

Well I have decided to download the Suse 9.2 DVD ISO from their mirrors... that'll also allow me to use my SATA HD... 9.1 wouldn't recognise my MB's SATA, but I have read that 9.2 will work with the 3112 chipset SATA (nVidia Abit N7F-S v2) so that is reason enough to reinstall.

I just installed 9.1 3 days ago, so it's no big loss.. and if everything does as planned, I will be scrapping XP for sure.

Thanks for the help! If it weren't for the great help everyone gives on these forums I probably wouldn't make the switch.

Cheers!

I have the same problem. No make command and I needed it.
I've installed an Compaq Presario 2100 with first fedora 3 core. After this big distro of 3 CD's I've installed Suse's 9.1 personal edition. THe last one detected everything standard on that Presario computer, except the PCMCIA card.

The Card is a not supported one (Siemens Santis PC CARD for wireless connection), but with the Atmel PCMCIA drivers from the Source Forge Project, it should work.

Only, I've got no make command and I'm new on the linux platform.

So can somebody tell were I can download (or which one) a RPM with the make commando.

Now I have to say that Suse 9.1 distro is so small, it worked quicker then the fedora core. It's the quick response how fast Crossover Office opens Word (Office 2000 premimium) on that platform. Even quicker then Open Office.
Really the best solution against Spy / Spam-ware ....

Can somebody help with that make commando ...

Thanks a lot

Peter
