No GUI?

I am trying to salvage data from a computer at work and I can only use what appears to be a terminal - When booting the computer, it has the text for what's being loaded and then gives me the option to login (still in the text mode), after logging in nothing changes.
How do I get the GUI back? Or failing that, how can I just copy the entire HD to a portable USB one? thanks!

Use parted magic live CD or something similar to recover data

Thanks, I ended up using a SLAX CD to get the data off.
