no 5.1 channel audio in built in realtek ALC888 sound card

i bought a new computer with MSi K9AGM4 mother board
which has a built in jack detection and supports 5.1 channel audio
i tried installing the drivers from realtek's website but i still do not have jack detection nor does the 5.1 audio work.

in fact my rear left and rear right are being played in the respective front speakers (NB i used the audio clip in the following url http://www.halfgaar.net/media/chan-id.zip)

Installing the drivers is one step. Did you also load the drivers? Try 'modprobe <drivername>' to see if that improves matters. If not, try running alsamixergui and checking the sound settings.

PS: when you modprobe the driver, use the basename (without the .o or .ko extension).

i noticed a peculiar thing i used a wave file to check my speakers and apart from the "front speaker left" and "front speaker right" the "rear speaker left" and "rear speaker right" were also coming from the corresponding front speakers. any suggestions about the same.
