Newbie to Suse Linux

I am completely new to Novell/SUSE Linux so please bear with me.

1) I sent away to PCTech101.com (http://pctech101.com/products.php?cat=221) for Novell/SUSE version 9.3. I am not sure what I am getting, but here is what I want:

a) I am currently running RedHat 8.0 in my small, one person office to handle testing my PHP programs and to run FTP. I do not believe that I need an Enterprise version of Linux with support.

b) On another box I had Fedora Core 3 running and in trying many times to install FC 4, I now have nothing. I am not a Linux guru; I just like my RH 8 box that runs and runs and runs. This is what I am hoping to get from SUSE.

2) Can someone tell me the difference between SUSE 9.3 Professional on the 5 CD's for $12.00 from PCTect101 and the $99 version at BestBuy. I do believe in paying for the time it has taken SUSE/Novell to package the OS; I am not sure about the price differences.

3) Where is the best place to ask Newbie questions so that I do not clutter up a Forum.

Many thanks....

Todd

I'm not sure what you're getting from pctech101.com either. I don't know how they can sell the SUSE dvd's at such a low price. You can get the official SUSE 9.3 dvd/cd set from Amazon for $55.00.

I think you'll be very happy with SUSE compared to Red Hat. Easy to install and YaST is your friend. The SUSE/Novell forum is the best place to ask your questions concerning SUSE.

I know what you will be getting friend :)

Hi rtcary

you will be getting a stripped version of SUSE9.3 PRO in 5 CDs. Should have spent a little bit more and get the DVD version, easier to load the program - read dont need to change so many CDs! ;p tht's all the difference between DVD & CDs.

Ok the difference between the pctel & original version from Amazon or Novell is that pctel's version is a stripped version - unable to play DVD out of box! A few other issues involving the commercialized programs bundled together with the real McCoy. Other than that, once setup, you could do a YAST update and you could get your DVD working again! The extra $$$ difference is just to save you the trouble of updating YAST

overall, Suse9.3 Pro is a super good distro that a linux newbie can ever ask for

overall im very very very satisfied with this Suse 9.3 Pro

enjoy ur installation! any problem, drop me an email & I will try my best to guide you along - err one word of caution - a newbie leading a newbie along an unknown path! ;p hahaha

cheers
