Unhappy Newbie probs upgrading to 9.2, Yast not allowing disk partition or DVD boot!!

Sorry, utter newbie here so I hope I'm able to aptlty describe my problem:

Trying to upgrade to Suse9.2 from the professional distro DVD, but when I try and boot from it, the first option screen comes up (eg Installation, Manual Installation, Rescue System etc), and when I select any of these nothing at all happens (well my screen goes black...).

I have also been trying to partition my hard disk using Yast (I currently have Suse9.0), but when I try to do this Yast seems to crash - well at least it sits there indefinitely with a egg timer and then even refuses to shut down, I keep having to power off and reboot.

I want to upgrade principally cos I have a new printer (hp psc-2355) which I have been trying t install with no success...and yesterday under advice opted to uninstall all CUPS apps in favour or LPRng..which promptly managed to remove all my KDE as well! I've managed to reinstall the KDE but from then on have been going round in circles...

Can anyone offer ANY advice before I pull all my hair out??!

Thanks!

when you're upgrading an existing Linux (which is not recommended) you cannot repartition, you have to use the existing partitions - that's the way of upgrading.

if you want to pass from 9.0 to 9.2 better do a 9.2 fresh install (back up your data first!)

the blank screen seems to be a bad monitor detection and it goes out of monitor's settings and it fails to autoprotection mode.

try to install it in text mode, see if you can go further with the installation.

with the 9.2 I had an awful screen definition when installing and I couldn't see the text on the screen (all black spaces) ... so I installed it in text mode.
