After receiving my broadband download subscription. I decided to try different distro's of linux. The ones i downloaded were slack 10 (I have used slack 9 at one point. chose it only because it was the only distro I could find at the time which had only one disk. Important with a dial-up account), suse 9.1, mandrake 10.1, and Fedora Core 3. Of the four, I settled for suse 9.1 because the install easily setup up all of my hardware out of the box. After having tested all the distro's (except FC3. For some reason it would hang on the reboot after the initial install) I reinstalled suse 9.1. Now there are two issues I wish to address. First off, for some reason CUPS is not recognizing my printer (on the initial test install, printing services worked fine). All that happens now is the print job sits in the que window, but never gets printed. I tried poking around the printer setup in the YAST utility, but to no avail.
Second off, when installing suse, there is a point (I think at the time that when the install prompts you to set up a non-root user account) there is a checkbox which asks you if you want suse to default to the users graphical desktop without prompting for a login password. I neglected to uncheck this feature and and now when i reboot my computer, it opens my non-root gui without password prompting. How do I disable this feature? I looked into the YAST user edit utility and did not see any feature which would indicate that I can undo this function.
Any ideas on how I can resolve these issue? All help is appreciated. Thanx
It can also be done from the KDE control center (for any distro that uses KDE).
control center-> system administration-> login manager-> convenience.
Normally, I would propose that YaST is your best one stop for system setup. Sometimes though (particularly with window manager setups) there simply isn't an option in YaST (It's wonderful, but not perfect). It's good to know that other config utilities exist and can be helpful.
Is your printer detected correctly? My problem with SuSE is that it doesn't seem to see the parallel port. I haven't needed to print from this machine yet, and am trying to figure it out.
Thanx for the input guys. I reset the user settings without error. as for the printer, i neglected to mention that on the second install i had to point cups to my computer type and connection source (usb). But it still did not work. there must have been a dependancy earlier in the install which i failed to include. At least that is a guess on my part.
