Need to get by Video config failure

Video defaulted to generic and X would not run on monitor (HP M70) card 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV graphics controller.

Sax would also not execute. Should i alter settings to get by this failure and move on? Thanks for any ideas.

Did you do an upgrade or what? Check first your logfiles (under /var/log) to see, if possible, what happened. Then you should see your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if SuSE uses Xorg, that is) file if it's all right. The error message(s) X gives when not starting all right should point you to a right direction..

A new install. What i don't understand is why a generic monitor default still won't work against X.

The error is: not good config. No video bios modes for chosen depth. (the depth appears to have defaulted to 24).

I think I'll try another monitor to see what happens. If anyone knows how to set the parameters for the HP M70 monitor, I'd appreciate the information.

thanks for the info. I'll recheck the logs and .conf to see if anything else is apparent.

I found the solution, in case it might help others - the problem was the driver for the video card (DELL 845G on my M70 Dell video) - the one on the system was newer but when I installed the older version, gnome came up just fine. The newer version must have been corrupted or had a problem from the get-go. Thanks for the response - helped me move in the right direction and talk through the troubleshooting correctly.
