I'm running Suse 10. I have downloaded an RPM of Audacity, the audio recorder program, but I get a long list of missing dependencies, and I have no idea how to get them all.
This is one of the things about Linux that drives me crazy. I just want to install and use the program. But I have to track down other RPMs containing dozens of different files, or it won't work.
Anyway, does anybody here know how to collect all the files I need to make Audacity work? Thanks.
This very thing used to bother me as well. RPMs are great (lots easier than compiling), but the system is a little weak on the dependency thing. Too often you are expected to find the packages you need to install to meet all dependencies. It can be done, but it is a waste of time.
If you keep running up against this, I strongly recommend you consider a Debian based system. As long as your /etc/apt/sources.list file is correct, you can run apt-get install <program-name> to your heart's content without worrying about figuring out dependencies. The system really does take care of all that. To install Audacity on Ubuntu, you just need to sudo apt-get install audacity, for example. In fact I did that not long ago.
In the meantime, it seems what you are up against is visiting one of the various rpm sites (like freshrpms.net) and feeding the dependencies you need into your system one by one. Unless someone else who has experience with SUSE and audacity has a silver bullet solution, that is.

You mean, like if he had a good set of repos in yast or smart?
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned where watha is most likely getting his rpms. The problem is not the distro.
That's what told me I was missing a bunch of files. I have the CDs but I don't know how to locate the files on the disks. I thought the software was supposed to tell me which disk to insert, if I needed to insert one.
Hmmm...I'll try installing the RPM with disk 1 in the drive...thanks.
