Question My system SUSE 10.3 stops at logon screen (welcome screen)

Hi, can somebody tell me what happened to my SUSE 10.3 system. I left my comp running for two hours and when I came back, there was only a mouse pointer on a black screen. After rebooting, the same thing happened. I tried CTRL+ALT*F4 and I was in the text mode. After SAX2 I get the monitor config screen, I can adjust the settings, but after rebooting, the same thing. I dont know how to start the system . Need Help.

A black screen after 2 hours is normal It already happens when the screen savers finished not normal is the mouse pointer
If nothing has happen during that two hours and you touch a key depending on you,re login procedure you get the desktop or
a login screen So my guess there was a short power failure
If you like to configure you,re screen again use in the failsafe mode yast>hardware>monitor graphic card
But you can also try to use the install cd or dvd and run the automatic repair procedure

all the best

well this might be a little inconvinient, once you login in text mode, you can run
Code:
startx
and that will bring you to the desktop

post any error output here if the startx method doesn't work

even so, this method is only temporary

Angry

Hi guys, nothing helped. When I am in a text mode and run startx (in safe mode too), I get the welcome screen and ater some minutes it goes to the black screen with mouse pointer and that is all.I can see my files in SUSE from TotalCommander in Vista.
I think I just need a command from SUSE text mode to run the system. ??

When you run the repair option from the install dvd or cd what was the out come ?

A lot of problems can be solved with this option and if not it told you with one is not repair able

Fail safe is just a other run level as desk top

all the best

I would use the repair option if there will be one in SUSE 10.3. This is the only distro since long time, which has a bug in the installation CD/DVD and this bug does not permit repair. But thanks anyway, I reinstalled the system and it is OK now. I would appreciate if somebody can tell me what caused this and what is the solution .

Suse 10.3 do have a repair option , any way the one I down load from Open suse has one and works
In the first place when you start the install CD it seems that she did has not one .
If you go a little bit further there is one
As I have not use recently I do not know when it appears . but it is there
Ad a certain moment she gives the option repair or install

all the best
