I just installed suse 9.3 last nite and I have to say, I was impressed. Everything just seemed to work. I went to fire it up again today, with my 5-button USB Intellimouse Explorer (properly detected by YAST) and the mouse pointer refused to move from the center of the screen. Tried disconnecting and reconnecting...it asks if I want to configure the hardware and identifies it properly, but it still does not move. Also tried with a generic 2-button PS/2 mouse, no better. Both devices work fine in windows. Is this a known issue? Is there any way I can try to troubleshoot it? Thanks in advance.

I have a similar thing happen. I used Alt-F2 to get the run screen and then executed YaST. With cursor keys, I selected Hardware and then the mouse. The mouse was recognized by YaST and started working without further action from me. The problem went away by itself. I've heard talk that the problem is less likely with PS/2 rather than USB mice.

You might also try configuring mouse control under Sax2. I had this same issue, with a cordless intellimouse from microsoft. It wasn't until I configured it under SaX2 that it worked all the time.

SaX2 is a hardware configure utility GUI which is executed by YaST. You may run it directly.

SaX2 is a graphical configuration tool that one can use with SUSE.

It can aid in setting up the graphics card, monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Try it out!

1. Log in as root in shell
2. Switch to init 3
3. Wait a bit, then type sax2 --versa 800x600
4. It will determine the best graphical configuration, but you will want to change the configuration to get at the mouse.
5. I had to use my keyboard here to move around (since the problem was with my mouse), but you can select the best possible configuration here.
6.Save what you have done
7. Switch back to init 5.

At least that is what I did and it solved the problem for me

I have a similar problem on my machine. Last night I bought a new mouse a pretty much standard scroll optical mouse with usb/ps2 connector (brand is okion, a generic brand in other words).

So anyway I plug it into USB port and SuSE9.3 detected it right away and could use it at the same time as my old genius scroll ps2 mouse, the system asked if I would like to configure the new mouse and I choose YES, prompting me to enter the root password and I did so but then nothing happened.

I thought it would be a good thing to go to YaST>Hardware>Mouse and configure it from there but there are no configuration options there, one can only select a type of the house (including the port it's using serial, ps2 or usb) and at the bottom there is TEST button. There is only 1 ps2 choice and two USB while the rest is for older mice. At this stage both mice still worked, the old scroll on ps2 and the new optical scroll on usb.

Since I'm not the only user on that pc I though just to make sure I would reboot and see if it works normally, I didn't though. Prior to rebooting I unplugged the ps2 mouse. After logging in the usb mouse didn't work, the pointer remained still in the center

I opened YaST>Hardware>Mouse again and the mouse worked again without doing anything, I mean as soon as the YaST>Hardware>Mouse windows would open the mouse was normal again. Again trying to find configuration for the mouse but it's simply not there. After closing YaST the mouse would function normally, I tried to run configuration through h/w monitor in systray but same thing, after putting in the root password nothing happens.

Bottom line every time I would restart the pc, re-login or restart x-server the mouse would not work and it would only start to function after simply opening YaST>Hardware>Mouse without any configuration what so ever ....

I know how you feel. I thought that I would have to reconfigure my mouse everytime I booted into SUSE. Configureing it through SaX2 made it work all the time, which made me feel better.

Ok, I've fixed my mouse problem as suggested using Sax2.

I didn't do it through console though, I just ran it from GUI (Alt+F2, Sax2 <enter>). It did took couple trial and errors to determine the right configuration since to know if it works properly or not you have to restart X each time, so after 3 or 4 times I got it right.

Ok then as always to make sure everything is in proper order I rebooted the system and then wham I was back at that ugly gray xdm login screen, so I had to open xterm again type kde to enter kde than go to YaST>Systetm>etc/sysconfig and change back the windows manager to kdm and desktop manager to kde (or is it the other way around), save the config and then reboot (yeah again) ....

After that my SuSE 9.3 system was shining and sparkling again

I don't know for sure but to me it looks like every time I configure something using Sax2, the desktop manager switches back to xdm (when I 1st time installed SuSE 9.3 that was what I got after 1st reboot), so I guess next time just to make sure I will check YaST>Systetm>etc/sysconfig before rebooting/shuting down.

Thank you so much for your help guys...I started up Sax2, just deleted the mouse entries that were there, rebooted, the mouse was redetected...and it just worked!

Yeah that's the beauty of GNU/Linux one doesn't have to relay on software vendor to resolve problems, all one needs to do is search for the solutions through community forums such as LQ and or through search engines in general ... if there are no solutions available yet post it on forums and for sure someone will help or at least try to help you out to resolve the issue.
