Mouse doesn't work anymore; YaST isn't helpful

I was having some trouble was a SUSE 10.0 installation a while back, so I played with some other distributions. However, I recently decided that it was time to return. Yet, I'm having more trouble now than before. I attributed my past problems to faulty hardware...probably a bad hard drive. But, this is definitely not the case here.

I installed SUSE Linux 10.0, and it worked beautifully. I logged out, and later went to log in again. But, instead of my KDE desktop, I got a console. So, I tried init 5...it said I was in init 5, but a display device couldn't be found.

I did an xorgconfig, and after some trial and error, I got my KDE back. And as far as I can tell, shutting down and restarting the computer gives me this KDE every time.

However, my mouse doesn't work. It's a USB mouse, and in dev I have usbdev1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.6, and 4.1. I have only five USB ports...so I'm wondering why there are so many there. But in any case, I tried them all in my xorgconfig...none of them worked. So, I opened YaST|Hardware|Mouse Model. Nothing happens for about ten seconds, then I get the grey screen/X cursor for about five seconds (during which time the mouse works perfectly), and then back to KDE with a non-working mouse and no YaST Mouse module.

Any suggestions on what's going on/what I should do? If you need more information on my situation, let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I had this problem some time ago. I fixed it with YAST2/Hardware/Graphics.

It seemed that the X-Server needed a mouse reconfiguration.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've tried that, and the same problem occurs. I choose "Graphics Card and Monitor", but the screen does nothing for ten seconds, then grey screen with working mouse for five seconds, followed by frozen KDE screen for five seconds, then KDE as normal sans mouse.

If I can find why YaST isn't working, I think I can fix the mouse problem.

Thanks again. Any other thoughts with this new information?

OK...I've fixed some of this. I have my mouse working again...it was /dev/input/mouse0, if you're interested.

But, the scroll wheel still doesn't work. So, I went to YaST to fix this...but YaST still doesn't work. The whole grey screen thing.

So, now my main problem is this YaST thing...any ideas, anyone?

Thanks in advance.
