modem suggestions?

I am running SuSe 9.3, just installed, it doesn't like the WinModems i have!

I tried a Hayes, with a R-232 cable for connectivity to unit , didn't work, it was old anyways!

Will one of the newer US Robotics work? External with a USB connection.

I have simple dial-up.

Any help would be appreciated.

try an external hardware modem with serial connection, that will definitely work (mine is working under suse 9.1). No drivers required!

usb is more complicated - check the HCLfor specific models. Serial connections work fine.

Hi Gpbuz1,

A U.S. Robotics 5686 external modem will work. You will have to purchase the cable connection separately. I recently had the same problem and spent almost a week getting onto the Internet using Suse. Good Luck!!

I also have a USR 5686 and it didn't work under Mandrake 9.0 until I did the v.92 upgrade. I did have an older model, but just so you know about that little tidbit. It is still working and I am using Mandriva 2006 now. Am thinking of trying a SUSE distro also.
Good luck.

Hi Gpbuz1,

I forgot to mention that the cable has to go to your computer's serial port not the parallel port. The are instructions within the modem box about the cable.

I have a US Robotics 5610b internal modem and I've not had any problems at all. They even have an RPM support file on their website: http://www.usr.com/support/product-t...asp?prod=5610b

Wow, that's good! Considering the price though I'm not sure it's your best option even if it does have specific linux support. I bought a much cheaper external serial modem, which didn't require any software and simply works great.

At http://cdb.novell.com you will see that most U.S.Robotics modems are compatible with Linux.

Thanks to all for the suggestions! They helped, I did locate a modem with a lucent chipset that worked finally!! I ended up having to check the stupid mode in modem properties( wonder if that is for beginners like me?)
