MAJOR PROBLEMS with install Please help
 

I was recently experiencing system irregularities so I decided to reinstall SuSe 9.2. But when I tried to re-install it would never get all the way through the process and I would get a little red box that says there has been an error and it could not be completed. I had tried to run the install a bunch of times and I would get this error box at different points during the install. Since I was not getting anything trying to install linux I tried installing winXP and it halted on that install. I finally got an error message and it was Stop 0x00000024.

It says it has something to do with the file system,,

Does anyone have any clues what is the problem here. I am not sure that it is just the disk because initially I was installing using 2 drives but I also tried installing SuSe on the new 250 Gb maxor that I bought.

Maybe it is a memory problem. You could run memtest from your SUSE boot CD.

I ran a memory check but I am unsure how to decipher the results. How can I tell if the memory is bad? At the top pass percentage bar is currently reading 99% but on the data that is in the middle half does not convince me that it is really passing. It has found 6450 errors so far and it shows only one passing. Should I assume that it is a physical memory problem and just go out and buy some new memory?

re-run memtest with only one stick of ram installed.if you only have one,then it's probably time for new ram.there shouldn't be any errors and definately not that many on a single run.
specific info on the hardware would be helpfull to.mobo make/model,ram speed/number of sticks,are you overclocked at all.

I only have one 512 stick in there right now. I am pretty sure that the ram is running at 300MHz. I am running with an older asus motherboard CUSL2_C ACPI BIOS revision 1006.a. It is a p3 1Ghz machine and I do not have it overclocked at all. No real modifications done.

unless your power supply is starting to die,then most likely it's the ram.

Thanks for pointing me in that direction. It was the memory. I did not really pay attention to how many sticks of ram it had when I installed the hard disk but I reopened the case and realized that there were 2 separate sticks. I pulled one out and ran the memory test and it still had the same amount of errors. Then I pulled that one out and replaced it with the other one. It immediately went through the first pass without a single error. Time to go try and find some old SD ram now.
