log into the gui as root


how do i log into the gui as root and do software updats

You do not need to login to the GUI as root to do software updates. All you need to do is run YAST from the GNOME or KDE menu as a normal user, enter roots password when prompted and then go to the Software Management section in YAST, then choose to update your system from the options available.
