Hello can anybody please tell me why when i start my computer i can not log in as root in graphical mode i have to work from a terminal all i want to do is quite simple i want to open a text editor and change a few things but if i log in as a normal user open a text editor i am not given the opportunity to enter root password please help

Login as normal user and open your text editor with root permissions (in KDE: select 'Run Command' from the KDE menu and type 'kdesu kwrite'.

If you're running KDE then locate the kdmrc file and modify the hidden user list to not include root. Though you shouldn't need to do this as you can open your terminal and do an su -
to log on to the root user with the root path and permission lists.

I have suse on my home system. I use mandrake at work so when I get home tonight I'll find it and let you know.

Man I need one more distro to mess with evidently I'm only slightly confused between RH, Mandrake and SuSE. I know I had this problem when I first installed SuSE a week ago. I can't find that file either. However, check out the how to on the link at the end. It might give you some ideas on where to look for the problem file. Basically, when you install SuSE it asks you if you want to automatically log in. If you say yes then you're kind of stuck. If you say no then you can log in as root but it won't be listed as one of the users you can just click on. LOL, only a week ago and it seems like a life time as I've had 2 hd crashes (on the same system thank the computing gods for spare HD's and Raid 5), a warehouse radio access point failure and repeated unsatifying run ins with Wyse technical support over their new s50 thin client which they swear you can hook up serially but can't tell you how to make a linux server recognise it. So I fear issues with my home play box have been pushed out of my brain.
