Live DVD: no sound mixer?
I have been trying out Suse 10.0 with a live DVD. Managed to get on line but then realised there is no sound. If I do the automatic configuration with Yast it tells me the sound card (Windows XP calls it Realtek High Definition Audio) is configured as snd-hda-intel. The /etc/modprobe.d/sound file reads:
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0
# u1Nb.Jsh1Dh_QRFB:82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
Even after configuring with Yast the speaker icon on the taskbar is covered with a red cross and tells me that there is no sound mixer. When I right click and select show mixer window a little window comes up titled KMix. In the window it says current mixer: (blank) - there isn't one.
So do I need a sound mixer? Why haven't I got one? How do I get one?
By the way, it's the same with two different Suse 10.0 live DVDs from different sources.
Thanks for your help.

Have you tried to run, as root, the command "aslaconf" at the command prompt? follow that up with an "alsamixer" to see if the command worked.
Should that not work, please paste the results of the command "lsmod" for me. Hopefully we can get you sound pretty quick.

I am new to linux also and am having trouble with sound also. I don't get any sound at any time. I have a older p3 system with a DT0398 in it, mfg 1998, I also have a ct live 4670 I could use but I am hesitant to change. I recommend the following site as this helped me get other things going from a windows enviorment to a linux .

lsmod results
Sorry for delay in getting back to you.
Alsaconf runs through and tells me it's playing a wav file - but I can't hear it.

Okay - this is a live CD and you never created any users, correct?
Theoretically, you should already be part of the "audio" group so you should be able to hear sound (this is what my problem was not too long ago - I had much the same symptoms)
Try this:
1) Run Alsaconf and alsamixer as root user, hopefully you will get the mixer to show up. (if you can't do this inside of X, hit Ctrl+Alt+bkspc and/or Ctrl+Alt+F1 and issue the command "killall X", followed by alsaconf and alsamixer")
2) add a user through kuser and make sure that they are part of the "audio" group. (Primary group should be "users")
3) Try Alsamixer now - hopefully it'll work.
Maybe? -_-
