Well if its a USB cable you'll need a driver to get the connection going. I would also suggest using BitPim for transferring pictures, video, ringtones, sounds, etc to and from the cell phone.
I have an LX8100 and use Bluetooth adaptor to connect to my phone, but my phone supports bluetooth. Does your phone do that? Perhaps you'd have an easier time that way.
BitPim might be able to locate your phone if you just connect it via usb and then tell BitPim which device to use (ie /dev/whatever).
