Lan on SuSE10: HORROR!!!
 

Hello everybody who uses SuSE10,

Nobody I know has been able to setup a working LAN in SuSE10 x86_64.

Samba has allways been THE connection, but now!?!

Who wants to join in something as a petition to get LAN working on SuSE10?

Could you please describe your problem more precisely?
I maintain several Suse 10.0 boxes/laptops which are connected to the LAN and work flawlessly.
Can you ping something on your LAN?

Do you use x86_64?

I presume, you would not reply if you didn't use x86_64.

All 'boxes' and laptops are visible.
They all can be accessed, just nobody can access any dir on the SuSE10 x86_64 'box'
I myself can not acces the dirs on this 'box' when I am on it, over lan.
I tried smb4k, and stored passwords, but no password has ever given access to any of the shared dirs.
The requesters come back every time, nothing else happens.
I use various OS'es, and they all communicate well, except SuSE10 x86_64.

We need your information to be helpful. LAN topology, number and OS of other boxes, what have you done to configure it and etc?

I have done it. It was no different then in 32 bit.

I use swat to set it up, and had no problems.

Swat I did not try yet.
I will do that first, and if that does not solve the problem,
we will start from the beginning.

In my old laptop i have Debian-Sarge 3.1 installed, I use Linneighborhood there. No problem at all.
Linneighborhood can access all other laptops and the P4.
AMD64 is only visible, but access is never granted.
That is the problem. How can the Dirs be accessed?

Where did you get swat?
It isn't in any of my repos.

I've got a lan here. I can transfer to and from my servers using samba and nfs. No problems whatsoever.

Please, mount the shares in your fstab. Saves a lot of trouble

I maintain a home network with a broadband internet connection. On my newest machine (AMD Athlon 64 3000+ on an ASUS A8N-E mainboard with integrated 10/100 lan) I now have installed a SuSE 10.0, and I have no any problem with lan. This linux box is visible on older SuSE 9.2 and vica versa, and the access of internet through a router is working well (I use this machine now).

You do not have SuSE10 x86_64 working?

I donot have a problem to see the shares, I can not, in any way acces them.
Yesterday I tried Linneighborhood, but it isn't up to x86_64.
Webmin does not compile, and swat I can not find.

Normal SuSE versions do not have this kinda troubles.

I also use broadband, and have integrated lan also, using K8V-X asus, AMD 2800+ Athlon 64.
All other connections work just fine. Only Lan does not.
I can only 'see' not acces.
I use DHCP to configure, but the information is not automaticaly set.
How did you set-up your lan, if I may ask?

swat is part of the samba package. http://rpm.pbone.net has it in its 64 bit OpenSuSE samba RPM. I see no mention of Windows so samba wouldn't be necessary. With Linux LANs nfs is the normal file sharing of choice. nfs or samba for that matter can be enabled in yast. The command line is very powerful but whenever I've had configuration problems using CLI, yast has almost always come to the rescue.

About the windows that arent mentioned:

There are some that resided from the past, and some still in use because off the need to use of some apps that are not yet fully implemented, and are used for jobs in windows-only environments (which are regretfully still around, on this here planet)

3)Compaq Armada E500 PIII 900: W2k/Debian-Sarge 3.1(youngest son's laptop: Highschooll begins integrating Linux, (Hurrah!))

4)Toshiba Satellite 2550CDT 366 Celeron-Mendecino: Debian-Sarge 3.1/DSL-Frugal (my speedy pride(!)with a superb soundcard.)

5)IBM PIV 1.8GHz: XPSP1/Kanotix 3.9 (Network-Server/Distro-Tester)

6)AMD64 Athlon 2800+ (1804MHz)Asus K8V-X: XPSP1/SuSE10.0 x68_64 (My PC)

4 laptops, 2 pc's.
There are 3 Workgroups: MSHOME, Home and TUX-NET.

Router: Level-One LAN/WLAN, Thomson Speedtouch 510,ADSL-Modem.
All Netbios names are unique, and are recognised, DHCP autoconfigures all, but SuSE...

All of them can be reached by one another, except SuSE, which cannot be accessed, and despite off all changes in order to get connected, cannot access any of the others.
All directories are visible, but none of them is accessable.
When i want to acces, a loginname and password is asked, and no password will ever grant access to none off the visible directories.
And I myself added the users and passwords..(which is not my choice, because in my router i can set-up who is able to get acces. But without setting passwords, it does not work either!) It simply does not work!

(I AM SURE THIS IS A BUG, AND NOT SOMETHING OF MY DOINGS! AND THE REASON FOR ME TO MAKE A PETITION, TO FORCE THE DEBUG, CAPICE?)

That is the problem!

Debian-Sarge--Debian-Sarge: Perfect connection.
Debian-Sarge (linneighborhood) windows: Perfect connection.
Windows-Windows: Perfect connection.

I am not using windows anymore since about six months, so it is terribly annoying not to have access to my own network.

IT MAKES ME FEEL AN ISOLATED PRISONER IN MY OWN HOME!

The network printer is on the IBM, and cannot be accessed, the scanner is on the IBM, and cannot be accessed, Various MP3's and Movies on my networkdrive, which is USB 2.0 and on IBM, is not accessable..

This shit is narrowing down my possibilities enormously, as you can understand...
I have to use various tricks to do the most simple jobs, which takes a lot of time, but is most off all very annoying, as you might understand...

But I am still alive, so one way or another, some day, this problem, will belong to the past......
