To clarify things a bit, I hope... SuSE 9.x, CD's play as they should. Install 10.0 and a bunch of things stop working including all audio from external sources (CD, DVD, TV card). I cleared up the lack of sound from the TV card and from programs like XMMS, using ogg and mp3 files.
Hmmm... let's see... I've just assumed the DVD's are still soundless and, as we all should know well, "Assume is the mother of all [expletive deleted]ups".
Soooooo... fiddle, fiddle, fiddle... fumble, fumble, fumble... stuff a CD in the drive and wake up xine. Make KsCD die (how does one keep it from auto-launching every time the CD drawer opens and closes???)... push the CD button and... well, doggies and dang! Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins are Neck to Neck, just like it says on the title/track screen!!! My, my, my!!! Stuff in the DVD's for Luc Besson's The Professional and... Gary Oldman's as scary as ever... how 'bout that.
So it's down to two problems: 1) keeping KsCD from launching when I don't want it to and B) getting the DVD drive to run with DMA support enabled and not freezing the system up.
