Kmail and user name/password

I have searched all over this forum and I found this question but no answer. How can you store your user name and password in Kmail? I've looked through all the kmail files but can't find anything that resembles "password". Thanks. i.e. when you start up kmail.

Do you mean you want to have Kmail remember your mail account's password? In that case you should search the settings dialogs, not files. If it stores passwords to some file, the file is probably encrypted somehow - hopefully at least.

Hi

Start KMail.

Click Settings => Configure KMail => Accounts

Select your account, click Modify.

Enter your password.

Check the box next to Store POP Password.

Thanks for the reply. I did what you suggested and it worked except now "wallet" wants a password too. So now I need to know how to store a password in "wallet". I've looked through it but can't see the answer. I thought I'd start using kmail instead of T'Bird. On edit I shut Wallet off and went through the routine again and got the window saying kde would save the password. Sometimes the answers to these problems are so simple it's embarrassing to come back and reply. Duh. I'm no newbie, got messed up on my user name and had to get another one , my old one was raysr. But it seems there's always something you don't know, that IS what makes Linux fun!

There are times the 'fun' wears a bit thin though........

If you have the KDE wallet Manager visible in your System Tray, skip the next step.

KMenu button => System => Desktop Applet => Wallet Management Tool

Left-click the Wallet Mangement icon in the System Tray.

A window should appear with an open wallet icon (must have been designed by a married man)

Right-click the icon and select Change Password.

Assuming you haven't previously set a password, you'll be able to set one there.

Thanks for the help. I'm trying to make a transition from T'Bird to Kmail. Now I can't read the mail that comes in. I was moving a line 3/4 of way down that says "description" on it and now I can't find the text of my mail. I can't describe it very well except the mail is up above and under this "description" line there's a folder or two that say "body". I can move the line up but I can't find the text. Can't find it if I move the line down either.

Go to Settings => Configure KMail. Choose the Layout tab.

Check options:
Folder List;
Long folder list

Message Preview Pane;
Show the message preview pane below the message list

Message Structure Viewer;
Show never

Message Structure Viewer Placement;
Below the message pane

It's the message structure viewer that's giving you the problem.

Just to add...if you don't want to use kwallet (it will keep popping up asking for passwords & becomes a PITA); you can disable it here also. I don't think it's necessary, kmail store your password in encrypted form already.

if you set a blank password for wallet it wont keep asking you for it, it will jsut open it,

this is not recomended for a sucuraty point of view but if you are the only one with physical acses to the machine then it should be ok

Much easier I think to just not use kwallet. If you still want to use passwords for your email just don't ask kmail to save password, then it will ask for it each time you send or receive mail. Kwallet is just yet another layer of password on top of that which I don't feel is necessary. If kwallet is active it will pop up each time you are asked for a password for anything, eg for this forum.

As I only use kwallet to store my various mail account passwords, I don't have it popping up for anything else. If you allow this forum to set a cookie, you won't be asked for a password either.

If you are like most people (up to your arse in passwords), something like a half-decent password manager can be a godsend.
