KInternet disconnecting
 

Hi all.
I installed SUSE 9.3 Two days ago so I am definitely a newb. My question is: How can I get KInternet to stop disconnecting my modem about every five to ten minutes?

Also, YAST shows that I have wvdial installed but I can't find it. It isn't listed with the KInternet dialer on my main menu. Where should I look for this program?

Why do you think it is Kinternet's doing? Please post the log (I think from /var/log/modem (?)) or directly from the Kinternet window.

You can use e.g. the commands "locate" or "find", but probably it is in /usr/bin or /usr/sbin.

Normally you should need neither. In the system-tray in the lower right corner is a little symbol like a plug. Click on this and it will handle the details (connecting / disconnecting).

You suggested that I use the plug shaped connection icon in my system tray. That is exactly what I've been doing. It is identified as KInternet. I note from reading the log that apparently it is also the wvdial program.

You asked why I thought it was KInternet causing the disconnection. I guess I don't really, but I don't know what else it would be. I've been with the same ISP for ten years and they have never cut me off even after several hours on line. I've used Kppp in the past and it never cut me off but I am unable to figure out how to use it In SUSE. It tells me that I must be root to use it and won't let me connect. So I deduced, perhaps incorrectly, that it was the KInternet program causing the disconnect.

I hope this info will help to find the problem.

BTW while I was typing this I was once again disconnected.

For security's sake please edit your post and change your four IP-adresses to something like local IP address nn.mmm.ll.kkk so as to avoid possible future trouble

Okay, here is the culprit
Obviously you choose an interval for idling (default is 300 seconds I believe) that you exceeded. This is for saving money for those of us who use dialup ;). If you have a flat rate you might want to disable this function (probably set it to zero) or increase it according to your needs. Best use YAST -> Modem -> setup (or some such) which will have a help page available if necessary.

Oops ;).

You must be root to configure your connection(s) but you can of course connect as a normal user. Please don't do that as root, we'll figure this out yet (but see above -- I hope ;)). Actually it is wvdial handling your connection's details, but nevermind, YAST is writing in the wvdial.conf to configure it for you.

I know it was pretty stupid to send my my IP addresses etc but frankly I didn't even read the log until it appeared here. I have now edited my post thanks for the heads up.

Your suggestion to use yast did the trick the page is about 3 pages back under modem config. I changed the timeout to 0 and so far I am staying connected.
