Keyboard prob: dead keys disabled after boot

I'm using SuSE 9.1 with a German keyboard layout. In Yast I chose the layout with dead keys, so that when I press an accent and then e the accent should end up on the e, not in front of it. The problem is that this setting seems to be lost during reboot. When I start the Yast module for setting the keyboard layout, 'German with dead keys' is already selected as it should be, and from the moment the module is displayed, without me changing anything, I can type letters with accents - I don't even have to accept the changes (there weren't any in any case), even if I just cancel the module the setting stays as it should be.

While this is ok as a workaround I'd prefer the setting to be fixed. Does anyone have an idea what I need to change to achieve that?

I've found it out myself, problem is solved. Apparently Yast2 just failed to eliminate the line

Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"

from the keyboard-related InputDevice section in /etc/XF86Config.
