kde update howto

OK I'll try to be a bit helpful this time.

Unpacking and building will just mess up your system probably. It can be done, but safer option would be use those prebuilt packages and update the kde files already installed.

So as I posted before you will need to add new yast source. You can download all kde 3.5.1 packages to local directory and add that to yast or you can add the official ftp-path to yast as repository.

If you want to play safe DO NOT RUN YAST inside kde when updating. Use gnome or other if available or run it in textmode(init3).

ADDING YAST SOURCE (ROOT):
Code:
installation_sources -a ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_10.0/yast-source/
Or you can use the graphical yast interface:
Open YaST, go to Change Source of Installation and press Add.
There, first select the protocol and, on the next page, enter the server and the directory.

Now when that thing has been added, you will need update every package available.
TO do this RUN YAST-> CLICK system -> CLICK Install and remove software-> WAIT .

CHANGE the filter to installation summary. CHECK KEEP on the left.

You will now see package listed on the right hand side. If the package has a blue color, it means newer package is available. Right click and select all+update if newer available. WAIT
Restart X and you will have kde 3.5.1.

WARNING! Things can go wrong in the process so if you think you won't really need the improvements don't update.

If i run yast2 in text mode, how do I do the right click operation and select the all+ update if newer option? Does that option relate to options in the Action menu? If so, they are labeled differently and I'm unsure what option to select.

That is a really good point.

I suggest you to use gnome or other system.
The update can be made in kde also, but it can be a bit problematic.

In textmode if I can remember correctly there is a some kind of menu available to choose that operation.
Right-clicking as you said can be a bit tricky.

So try yast in textmode, if it feels too hard to control, use yast in graphical mode.
