KDE Keeps Losing (Some) Settings
 

I'm having trouble getting KDE to behave correctly. It only seems to want to keep *some* of its settings. Others it loses, others it ignores.

Examples: I changed the background color, and that stays what I changed it to no matter how many times I log out or reboot. My specifications for theme and window decorations seem to stick as well.

I changed the background image (wallpaper) and that gets lost as soon as I reboot.

A reboot will often dump me back to 1024 x 768 screen resolution. It's anyone's guess what font size I'll get, and the icons on the desktop will all have new locations.

I have my screensaver specified as "Goop" under "Rapid Motion". It works properly when tested, but as soon as the saver kicks in, it literally picks one at random. (Several, I've noticed. It'll roll with one for a while, then switch to a different one, and so on.) So this setting is just plain being ignored.

According to YaST, my KDE is version 3.2.1-68.23.

Any advice? These are minor issues but annoying ones...

the resolution needs to be changed in yast, the screen resize & rotate only works in a session.
If you are keeping an account from an other distro you might get some issues with ownership, and if your user does not own the .kde folder, crap will follow.

Try to create a new user, if this fixes the problems, copy your documents to the new user, and change the owner on them.

It looks like that's the problem. I had a setup with my main user being "dave". I then had to reinstall, and kept "dave" as the user, using the same home directory as before. Now it doesn't appear that kde is changing anything in the .kde directory. I tried to chown that directory to "dave" but that doesn't seem to have worked.

If I try to save kde settings, I get:
"Error - Desktop: The Specified folder does not exist or is not readable."

How can I give "new" dave the fulle rights to "old" dave's directories?

create a new "dave"
 

delete the user account of "dave" but not the folder, then rename the dave folder to anything else, create a new "dave" and copy your dokuments from the old "dave" folder to the new. first change the permissions!!! I use konqueror to change the permission usually, though if you know how to use chown then go ahead, in konqueror you are able to mark off "change perm for subfolders"
