KDE: Cannot Log in to KDE or Gnome

I have just downloaded the latest KDE updates from the SuSE site (automatically, through the update facility in YAST) and now I cannot log in to KDE at all--or for that matter, Gnome and so forth. The only way I can log in is through the console, or into Root. I even created a new profile, hoping that I could use that, but again, once I rebooted, I could not log into the graphic interfaces like KDE and Gnome.

Additionally, I put in my DVD and opted for the system repair, and this got me nowhere either. All I can tell you is that, from the console, when I try to initiate KDE, it says there is a problem with the KDE init file.

Does anyone have any advice on this ? It is intensely frustrating to have to use Windows again and I am loath to reformat my Linux hard-drive and lose some of the data and all those delightful customised settings. Any advice and help from those of you more experienced in SuSE and Linux would be most appreciated !

Many thanks in advance ...

Check the logs for a specific error. You may just need to re-run sax2.
