k3b problem SuSE 10.2
I can not run k3b (k3b 1.0rc4 (using kde 3.5.5 "release 45" openSUSE 10.2))
I am running SuSE 10.2 (box version). dvd writer HP 630i Everything was working ok under SuSE 10.1 (this was a clean install). The hardware works right now under win) The initial version that came with the distro (0open with the message that cdrecord should be run as rot. The setup module was missing and did not allow to do the changes inside of the k3b setup as indicated in the message. I did it #chmod 777 /usr/bin/cdrecord && chmod 777 /usr/bin/cdrda Reboot program still does not work and freeze the system: 1. the image is produced OK 2. when it tries to write nothing happens and I had to do a hardware reset Then I upgrade to the new version mention above. The cdrecord message comes. This time the setup module is there so I accept it. Now the message is not there. I try to copy a DVD and again the image is made without problem but system freezes when try to write. I found this thread that is exactly the same problem I have. Any tips? http://www.unixadmintalk.com/f61/k3b...system-257331/ Any clues where the problem is? TIA -=terry (Denver)=- |
have you tried burning from the commandline with cdrecord?
|
Patrick,
Under SuSE 10.2 cdrecord has been dropped. Under /usr/bin/cdrecord you find a link to wodin. It is hard to believe that before the box SuSE 10.2 they did not check k3b a very popular application. Well I went back to the k3b that came with the box and keep working on it :-(. Patrick thanks for your suggestion. -=terry=- |
that may cause your error. K3b, last I checked, depended upon cdrecord. Try downloading an rpm for it.
|
Patrick, good tip. I did install cdrecord 2.01 and remove the link. k3b recognized cdrecord. The program again was able to read the source but crash during writing. I do have installed w32codecs and libdvdcss. I hope this is not some time of scheme to implement copy protection. The fact that other users (as showed in the link above) have the same problems concerns me. I will try to contact them and see if you have other things in common.

As suggested there, did you go into the K3b menus and disable automatic removable media mounting? That's such an ugly hack though. Perhaps try using the rpm tool to remove k3b altogether, and install a vanilla one via source. Perhaps Suse tweaked their package to expect woodin and a vanilla would run better.

Yes I did without luck. Now I am reinstalling SuSE again. I will test k3b before I do anything and see what I get. I have been running suse 64 since version 9.0 and it has been great but this version I have many problems. I may go back to 10.1 or even change distros and go to gentoo. This is my last attempt.
I really appreciate your input. I'll let you know what happens this time. Ciao -=terry=- |
Still I can not burn DVD under SuSE 10.2 here is a summary:
ref: SuSE 10.2 64 (box) amdfx-55 4 sata HD Samsung/Toshiba cd/dvd writer (IDE) (Master) Sony atapi ait-1 tape (Master) HP DVD 630i (IDE) (Slave ) I have 10.2 running well EXCEPT that I can not burn dvd. I have been googling everything that It came through my mind. If this is not resolved I'll be back to SuSE 10.1 where everything work well. I love SuSE 10.2. hope you can help me. Symptoms: -k3b trying to copy dvd or trying to copy a directory into a dvd it creates the image (50% progress) then waits then the system locks and requires hard reset. - growisofs trying to burn and image or a directory it produces errors and the the led in the drive keeps blinking until I do a hard reset. -I can burn CD and I can erase CD -rw -I can format dvd-rw+ What I have tried: 1 Many clean installation of the OS (5 times) 2. Try to burn a dvd before any updates 3. Try to burn dvd after the updates suggested in the SuSE dvd from the box 4. Try to burn dvd after new version of growisofs (7) and k3n 5. Decrease the speed of burning under growisofs to 1, 2 6. Remove wodim and replace it with cdrecord. 7. Install the new dvd+tools 8. With the new setup, try in this order until something works:
1. Burn on CLI w/cdrecord and mkisofs 2. Use rpm and remove K3B and cdrecord entirely, then build from source and try 3. That failing, use something other than Suse. I worked with suse 10.1 for about a year and I think I had 3 positive experiences. Good luck, but if you are in a position to be doing clean installs you may want to take the opportunity to try a better distro (I'm irrationally prejudiced against suse) |
Revert to k3b-0.12.17. K3b 1.0.x is still quite buggy and almost all the discs I have tried to burn using it have failed (on Gentoo and openSUSE). The burn process is always successful if I downgrade to k3b k3b-0.12.17.

Under suse 10.1 everything worked OK I am trying to see if the modify version of cdrecord (aka wodim) that comes with 10.2 works If not I will remove it and install the original cdrtools-2.01.01a23.tar.gz . For some reason in my previous attempt did not work but I may have some of the suse versions sitting around. I I do not have dvd burning working I will move to another distro wich I do not prefer. I love suse (not necessarily some of the political games Novell got involved with in the last few months!) Thxs again Patrick. -=terry=- |
So did you try downgrading your version of K3b as I suggested above. The released version of openSUSE ships k3b-0.12.17.x and it works perfectly. I think 1.0.4rc is from packman or guru and its not stable at all.

Someday I am going to try to find out what is causing the unable to open disk drawer problem. I'm sure it is a permissions thing. |
