K icon change and hard drive mounting
 

Hi there,
Two things to ask

Firstly I am using SuSe 9.1 pro and I was wondering if there was any way I could change the K menu Icon. There is no real reason for this just wanted to make my desktop match up with all the icons. (Yeah I know its a little pathetic)

Secondly: When I installed suse I bought a second hard drive as my windows installation died (as it does) I wanted to transfer all the files I needed across to a new hd as the 30g was getting full. Install went well and I basically use suse all the time and have managed to fill my 40g up in the two months I have had the installation. What I want to do is now get suse to recognize the 30g hd and use it as a file storage drive for all my music and videos. At the moment I can't actually access the drive as It says it needs mounting and I don't know how to do that. I would prefer to format the hardrive as well just so its a fresh start and completely free of all that is M$. So how do I mount the drive and format it so I can then use it for my file storage.

Wow nothing like a bit of a waffle is there?

1) Changing the K menu icon is usually as simple as replacing the kmenu icon file in the icon set with the one you want to use...name it the same as the one you are replacing.

Now that being said, you'd need to do it as root if you were changing a system icon set. (/opt/kde/share/icons)

2) In YaST, use the Partitioner tool to format and create an initial fstab entry for the hard drive. I usually have to tweak the fstab entry a bit afterward to get it like I'd like.

Since I don't automount external devices, I use KwikDisk to mount my external drives.

Of course there's a world of stuff you need to understand before this makes sense. Let us know more or less what you get and don't get and we'll try to expand a bit.

Cheers for that can you clarify for me the step by step way of formating the hard drive. I found the tool but I am a little scared of doing something wrong. Sorry just over cautious.

Question: Did you want to use the drive exclusively for Linux, or for both Windows and Linux?

Exclusively linux as I dont have a working version of windows on my pc at the moment

I started to write something up, and pretty quickly realized it was going to be pretty much like a manual if I covered all the bases...so, let me suggest you take a look a Partitioner and then post specific questions on using it. That will save me a lot of work, and focus on what you need to know, not what I might think you need to know.

Basically it boils down to this:
1) create a mount point for the drive
2) reformat the existing partition on the drive to ReiserFS
3) set the fstab options to allow any user to mount the drive at the mount point with write permissions
4) mount the drive as root
5) assign r/w access to the mount point for the user(s)
