Hello. I am using SuSE 9.1 personal and am having a little trouble with my modem. I bought an external USB modem from eBay, as my previous one had been a useless PCI winmodem. I didn't expect any trouble with this one as I was led to belive that most external modems were hardware based, but am now begining to doubt that
It is a trust external 56k USB modem with an SGS chipset, if that makes any sense to anyone. I did a bit of googleing for "SGS", but nothing interesting came up.
So my question is: Is it in fact a winmodem in disguise? And if it is, does anyone konw if a free driver exists for it?

I'am not really sure but maybe it's the usb hub that
might be the problem.

Your not wrong the usb is probably a winmodem requiring code on your processor to run it.

the best way to test for an analogue modem is run kppp and go to it's terminal. A normal modem will work with the at hayes command set. Typing "at" will reply with "OK" and typing "ati" will reply with the manufactures information.

This may not work with a usb based modem though, since the usb needs extra code to run and might not be in your kernel.
