Installing Suse 10 on a Suse 9.3 system
Hi,
I just got Suse 10. I have installed it on my Laptop with no problems at all, well bar one - I don't know how to install ndsiwrapper and get the wireless Realtek RTL8180L to work. If anyone can help me out with this I would be grateful.
However on to the topic on hand. I have on my PC Suse 9.3. I have a bunch of stuff downloaded on the two HDD I have in it.
I would like to do a complete install of Suse 10 on the machine. Do I have to burn all the data onto DVD's, save my FF profile and bookmarks on a CD, etc, and then do a complete install, or can I install without all the burning of data, and still keep my data and profiles etc after the installation is done??
Thanks.

upgrading seems to be a pain, it's the dependencies. That was my very humble limited experience. If I had to do it over again, I'd get a new drive, install 10 on it, copy the stuff I want from the old drives, and go from there.

I don't want to upgrade. With windows you can do a clean install over a previous installation and NOT lose your data or settings. I was wondering if the same applied to linux.

In my limited experience I've not been able to upgrade the KDE, never mind the OS. The whole "dependency thing" is a real pain.
The reply above is the best bet, buy a new HD or add a new partition and put Suse10 on there.
If you buy a new HD (they're really cheap nowadays) leave some space unpartitioned so you can play with other distros too.

If you remove the packages you manually installed, the Upgrade is quite painless.

There is no perfect path to upgrade. One thing you can do is install 10, but DO NOT format your /home partition. This way the data in your home directory will stay intact.

Usually, there would be a problem with the hidden files in the /home folder.
I would personally prefer deleting all the hidden folders. (Hidden folders -- the folder names that start with a '.' (dot))

I just did an upgrade from 9.3 to 10.0. I previously installed a number of packages from guru, packman, mozilla and openoffice. Yast found no problems with some and some dependency issues with others. For those aps with problems, YaST gives suggested options. I usually close don't install. The only thing I had problems with was playing DVD movies. To fix, I deleted all xine related RPMs and installed RPMs from http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ and all was well. All of the KDE and other customization I had for from 9.3, worked well in 10.0. And if hadn't worked, I would have done a clean install over it. IMHO, with 10.0 upgrade is worth a try.

Nice to hear this.
Upgrading is really a pain in the ass, when things go wrong.
Thanks for sharing the experience.
I am now giving upgrading a second thought.

I have 2 HDD's at the moment. I am thinking of installing a third one. If I move all my data from my HD1 over to HD2, can I format ONLY HD1 and do a new installation, WITHOUT damaging the data on HD2?

You cannot install anything from a Live CD / DVD.
You will need to download the Setup CDs for installing or Upgrading.
Take a look at this page to see what to download.

i have run the upgrade no problem, on a server that refuses to install FC4 (media check fails and installer dies, but the chksum works fine and have used the media in other machines) and had a hard time installing 9.3 when i redid it. i will say this; if you run multiple processsors (not sure if this applies to multiple cores also) be very careful, they seem not to like the installers for most distros. perhaps it's because the kernel that loads up to run the installer, YaST in this case, is not the multiple cpu kernel that eventually gets installed on the machine. that is frequently my issue anyway. if you do have upgrade and it doesn't look like the cds/dvd will do it correctly, what i recommend is wait for all the mirrors to have the ftp install iso and download that. i have NEVER had a problem doing it that way.
