Dear friend ý am newbie on linux I am trying to learn linux
I started linux with fedora and I am trying to learn other linux distributions
but when ý begýn use suse/novel distribition. I have alot of problem fýrst ý can install rpm packet ý know we ýnstall ýt with rpm -i but when ý check rpm -q you do not ýnstall ýt then ý ýnstall lt with yast second problem ýn tar packet
ý am trýying to ýnstall
fýrst tar zxvf packetname.tar.gz or rat
cd packetname
./configure
but after thýs step ý dýdnt start make and make install ý ask same frýends how can ý fýxx they say you must install kernel2.6.4.-52 in i586 and uptade your kernel then you use the make and make ýnstall but ý dýd not ýnstal exactly ýn termýnal so ý ýnstall wisth yast
After thýs steps ý download some tar packet for testýng the code work or not but ý does not work agaýn
how can fýxx ýt??
maybe ý can install lýnux with some problem because ý am newbýe

In SUSE, most things become much easier when you are using YaST. Especially in package installation. On command-line, you can try 'yast -i <rpmpackage>'.

To your second problem: as far as I remember, the default package selection in 9.1 did not include development tools such as make, gcc, libraries and devel packages. So make sure that those are installed (YaST). Which of those you need depends very much on the source you want to compile. The output of ./configure will help you to find the required packages.
