installing problem on suse (ı am newbie]


Dear friend ı am newbie on linux I am trying to learn linux
I started linux with fedora and I am trying to learn other linux distributions
but when ı begın use suse/novel distribition. I have alot of problem fırst ı can install rpm packet ı know we ınstall ıt with rpm -i but when ı check rpm -q you do not ınstall ıt then ı ınstall lt with yast second problem ın tar packet
ı am trıying to ınstall
fırst tar zxvf packetname.tar.gz or rat
cd packetname
./configure
but after thıs step ı dıdnt start make and make install ı ask same frıends how can ı fıxx they say you must install kernel2.6.4.-52 in i586 and uptade your kernel then you use the make and make ınstall but ı dıd not ınstal exactly ın termınal so ı ınstall wisth yast
After thıs steps ı download some tar packet for testıng the code work or not but ı does not work agaın
how can fıxx ıt??
maybe ı can install lınux with some problem because ı am newbıe
my system is suse 9.1 proffesional thanks for everthıng

In SUSE, most things become much easier when you are using YaST. Especially in package installation. On command-line, you can try 'yast -i <rpmpackage>'.

To your second problem: as far as I remember, the default package selection in 9.1 did not include development tools such as make, gcc, libraries and devel packages. So make sure that those are installed (YaST). Which of those you need depends very much on the source you want to compile. The output of ./configure will help you to find the required packages.

Just a note: please check your character encoding. Your post appears with many strange symbols on my screen, which makes it difficult to read.
