Installing new programs

I can’t find a way to install new software on my Suse 10.0 machine. For example, I downloaded Thunderbird and when I click on it all it does is decompressing the file, it does not complete the installation. I also tried with the Run command and the result is identical.

Did you download a RPM or tar or tar.gz or tar.bz?

SUSE 9.3 has the RPM on the install disks. I would imagine that 10 would have the files on its install disks.

In which case running YaST and searching for Thunderbird should help you.

1- I downloaded a GZIP file from the Mozilla web site.
2- I did a search in Yast2>Software Management for Thunderbird. The answer was no result. I also searched in Yast by entering the path where the file is located. Again the answer was no result.

Try this rpm - ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/mozilla/experimental/thunderbird/10.0/MozillaThunderbird-1.4.1-1.1.i586.rpm

In case the link doesn't work, go to http://rpm.pbone.net and click advanced search. Uncheck All. Check SUSE Other. Type in thunderbird into the search box. Click search.

Thanks for your advice Jongi. I managed to install Thunderbird as per your instructions. Now, how is it done when you can’t find an equivalent rpm like this ‘Video-DVDRip’? I have found an equivalent rpm for Suse 9x but not for 10.0. I tried the version for 9x but it didn’t work. I had all kind of dependencies problem with it.

Hi kingkongadp64,

Open up YaST and click Installation source and add these sources.
You can get rpms for ver 10.0.
You can also add java if you are interested.

http packman.rsync.zmi.at/suse/10.0
ftp mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java
ftp mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source
ftp mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra

Thanks

Installing rpm files works well for some applications but for others, I’m not sure. For instance, I installed Flash Player and the installation was flawless but it doesn’t work. When I try to play a flash movie it opens a window asking for the program to use but I can’t find the Flash Player. All the applications seems to be in the folder /usr/share/applications but Flash Player is not there.
