installing ATI driver - problem

when i try to build the kernel module i get error:

/bin/sh: scripts/basic/fixdep: No such file or directory

and then it stops.

This is on SUSE 10.0, with latest updates. Before doing init 3, i did a make mrproper, make clean and make cloneconfig.

Any ideas? I also tried adding /usr/src/linux to the PATH and have checked that /usr/src/linux/scripts/basic/fixdep actually does exist.
