Installing a new Nvidia card

I have installed a AGP FX5200 Nvidia card in my pc now.
The nvidia driver are installed by you.
I am about to install a 6800GT Nvidia card.
Do i have to do anything with the driver before install or will it work automatic?

I recently upgraded a 32mb Geforce MX2 to a 256mb 6200 xfx (both AGP) and I had no problems whatsoever. I did a reinstall of the drivers from the source supplied by Nvidia just in case it would have an impact though everything 'looked' okay in X.

Well, are you putting in a replacement card or are you adding an additional card?
Either way, I'm pretty sure you won't have to do anything with the driver. NVIDIA's driver is a one-size-fits-all kind of thing and the only time you need to reinstall it is when you change your kernel (or it just craps out on you).

That's only it theory though, I've never done it. Worst case scenerio is that you have to reinstall the driver. No biggy.

You'll probably have to change the XF86Config file though.

Here's a little HOWTO I think would be helpful:

I'm going to replace the existing card with the 6800GT.
Thank you for replying.

This is not completely true. Normaly Nvidia has one driver for the whole range but the latest driver from Nvidia does not fit with a lot of older cards. They have a list from it on their site.

If you have a new card, always take the last driver.

If you have an older card look in the info from Nvidia if it is compatible with your card.
