Installed OpenSuSE 12.1 but have no graphics driver...
During every previous new install I was given the choice to add "Community" repo's (ie...Pacman, Mozilla and Nivida). But this time no such opportunity...OpenSuSE added four default repo's and then carried on with the install. With about one third of the new install left a message box appeared stating that no graphics driver was installed so YAST would use a default frontend. That was fine, because I was able to complete the install but as you can quess when the boot loader came up for the "First New Boot" it dropped me to the CLI...I can log in as root or my user but dont have a clue of what to do next...very little knowledge of CLI.
The disk I used came from Linux Format magazine which I have used before to install a new version. Every previous disk had a Repair option but 12.1 does not (thought I could add Nivida via that method).
I have done some searching for this issue but so far to no avail. How can I remedy this issue ? Does this issue have anything to do with Novell-Microsoft deals in the past ?
Which graphics card do you have? I installed 12.1 with the x86_64 Cd downloaded from the openSuse website, and it installed the new "xorg x11 nouveau" driver and everything worked out of the box, including getting my dual monitor set-up correct.
knudtl...thanks for the link, will check it out...as I mentioned, I cant access the GUI login...I am greeted by a command prompt...username and password work but then I'm stumped after that.
sadigdm...I have a Nvidia GeForce 5500...and I used the DVD (from Linux Mag) that supports i586 arch.
Is there an x86_32 bit cd available from OpenSuSE ? I'm willing to give it a try...
Could you provide me with the link if available...thanks in advance
I have Athlon XP CPU
2GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce 5500 512 RAM
sadiqdm - thanks for your help but according to John VV my system is in need of a serious upgrade...MB, CPU...etc or I say goodbye to OpenSuSE (or go back to 11.3 while the updates last)...regardless thanks for your help/advice.
John VV - in the past I would check out the hardware specs before installing any new OS...shame on me for being lazy...so upgrade my GPU (or entire system), go back to 11.3 or say bye bye to SuSE and hello to CentOS 6 (or another)...seems like my only choices...??? Anyway, thanks for your input.
