installed new kernal, how do I restore the old one?
 

Hi. I downloaded kernel 2.6.10 and installed it through yast, I rebooted to use the new kernel but the system no longer loads into X. I tried running the text based yast tool and went into add/remove software, but i can't install the 2.6.8-24 kernel that came on the suse 9.2 dvd. It only displayes the newer one. How do I reinstall the older 2.6.8-24 kernel? Will this restore the system to it's previous state? I can't think of anything else to do. the message I got was error no screens found, but I made no changes to my graphics configuration prior to the kernel update. I have a geforce 4400ti and it had the nvidia 3d drivers installed. I'd appreciate help, I really don't want to reinstall the os. Thanks

Reinstalling the old kernel probably won't help. Have you tried reinstalling the nVidia drivers? Or, for that matter, re-running xf86config?

You need to run the nvidia setup program again to compile a kernel module for your new version of the kernel.

How do I run the nvidia setup program again? I originally installed it by clicking on updates in yast and choosing the nvidia 3d drivers. Also, I tried my other video card, a radeon 9200 and it too did not load correctly.

I ran the suse yast configuration utility, i'm running x.org. I was able to choose a videocard in it but it had no effect

ok it is in fact the nvidia kernel modules that are failing to load, you guys are right. How can I remove these kernel modules? Even using my radion video card that I have as a spare, these kernal modules load. And running sax2 makes no difference either, so these modules have to go.
I believe i got the new kernel from this ftp site ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/i386/HEAD/

Now I checked the site, and it appeares they don't have kernel sources for kernel 2.6.10, do I need them? I just want to get kde back up and running at this point.

Hey, I got kde back up and running again. All I had to do was run the nvidia installer as jschiwal said. Thanks man, same to you scuzzman, you guys pointed me in the right direction. I was kinda nervous there, but I did learn something out of it all.
