Installation Problems
 

Ok guys... I'm having a major problem getting SUSE installed on my PC. I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with a 2.4 gigahert P4, 512 megabytes of ram. So on to the problem. First of all, I have 2 hard drives, a C and a D drive. I ONLY want Linux to occupy the D drive and in no way interact with the C drive. Whenever I try setting up my partitions for SUSE it always says it's mounting to the c drive with a 3.5 gigabyte partition for linux and a 512 megabyte swap partition... sooo I just set it not to mount to the C drive (which i dont really know what that will do) I really dont know if that's what i needed to do or not. Next major problem (the biggest) is every time i start the installation, the progress bar only gets to about 3 or 4 percent before the install just freezes. I know it can't be something with the CD because i just burnt it and it's like a day old. Any help is greatly appreciated because I'm new to Linux and want to try it out.

I have only installed like this once, but your configuration matches mine.

Sounds as if you had it create partitions on C, but just didn't mount them. That could be why things hang. The OS starts, goes to mount a drive (to continue the boot process), but has none to access.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the install process well enough to tell you a) how you should have selected D or b) how to fix from where you are. But maybe this will help some. Anyone else?

It could in fact be the cd - I scrapped 2 cd's before I slowed my burned down to 2x and finally got a good one.

There are a ton of options when installing suse. The first screen should have options for partitioning - if you will click on that more options will open allowing you to specify a drive and how much drive space you want to use...

I know, I tried selecting to use the entire D drive and every time I did it still said "mount to C:\windows or something along those lines. I mainly dont get why if I'm selecting to use the entire D drive it's still trying to use the C drive for anything at all. I'm going to try the burning speed thing too CouchMaster. Thanks all

After thinking about it - you might not be able to boot off of the slave and that's why suse insists that you put it on C: - it makes sense. I have both of my HD's set as cable select and connected to the same ribbon but I have a 4PDT power switch connected to both drives. Switch to the left and Xp boots up - shut down and switch to the right and SuSE boots.
